Royal Birkdale No. 9
Royal Birkdale has contributed mightily to the historical framework of golf in England.
Consider 8 Open Championships, the Walker Cup, the Ryder Cup and the Curtis Cup have all been contested on this linksland, in addition to other tournament events.
This century-old course rests atop sand hills and the par 4 9th hole is quite representative of the superb quality of golf to be found here.
This dogleg right of considerable length demands a straight tee shot. Both sides of the valley-like landing area are lined with buckthorn and dwarf willow, either of which pose immense problems for the golfer. The plateaued green is somewhat elevated, requiring a high, soft approach. The roster of players who've done precisely that on this hole include Palmer, Trevino, and O'Meara. All found continued fame here.
A final note: this tradition-bound club features one of the newest, most functional clubhouses in all the U.K. Its white exterior lies in stark contrast to the surrounding landscape. It is a striking facility that fits the scene.
