Torrey Pines has long been recognized as one of the
nation's premier municipal golf facilities. Often referred to as
a "Golfer's Paradise," the North and South courses are bounded
by mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
The course takes its name from the indigenous Torrey Pine which is native
to the area and to Santa Rosa Island. The tree is distinguished
by having clusters of five pine needles. Annual host of the PGA
Tour's Buick Invitational, Torrey Pines was renovated and lengthened in
2001 by Rees Jones in preparation to challenge the world's finest players
in this year's U.S. Open.
